Ringworm and Other Pesky Parasites

November 11, 2014

Many kids hear “ringworm” and think a real, wiggling worm is under their skin. While it’s funny to think about, ringworm isn’t funny to actually deal with.

Ringworm, along with jock itch and athlete’s foot, is a part of a group of related skin infections called tinea. They are all caused by different types of fungi categorized as dermatophytes. This mold-like fungi live on the dead tissues of your skin, hair and nails causing an itching sensation. Ringworm gets its name from the raised rings that form on your skin.

Contracting ringworm occurs most commonly from person to person contact. It’s extremely contagious, so avoid touching any infected areas on another person. You can even contract it from cats or dogs.

If you discover a red, scaly patch or bump on your skin, call one of our certified dermatologists promptly. Treatment for ringworm is typically easy and usually involves some form of antifungal regimen. Your dermatologist will determine which method best suits you. Ringworm doesn’t have to be as scary as it sounds, and your Knoxville Dermatology Group friends are ready to help.

If you have any questions about ringworm or about changes in your skin, please call us today at 865-690-9467. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
