The Pain with Nails

December 6, 2012

There is nothing more frustrating than a problem with one of your nails. You see and feel it every single day. Whether it is an ingrown nail or a fungal infection, it can be painful and embarrassing. Luckily, there are many cures for these two ailments and they can be found at Knoxville Dermatology Group.
Ingrown nails are caused by pressure of the nail against the skin on the side of the nail. Prolonged periods of pressure can cause irritation of the skin, swelling, infection, and pain. These ingrown nails mainly occur in the big toe because of the amount of pressure the body puts on it. There are three common stages of ingrown toenails. First, the skin surrounding the nail is red and painful to the touch. This is due to inflammation and irritation. Next, the skin becomes infected and may bulge over the side of the nail and possibly ooze blood or pus. If this happens, you need to immediately see a doctor.

A fungal nail infection occurs when a fungus attacks a fingernail or toenail. This can happen through tiny cuts surrounding the nail or nail bed. The most common fungus that affects nails is the same one that causes athlete’s foot. Fungus grows best in warm, moist places, and can spread from person to person so it’s important to not infect others. You can get a fungal nail infection from walking barefoot in public showers or pools or by sharing personal items, such as nail clippers at home or at a salon.

If these symptoms sound similar to what you are experiencing, call 865-690-9467 to book your appointment today and discuss the solutions to your nail problems.
