Preventing Under-Eye Dark Circles

September 11, 2017

Anyone experiencing mild amounts of stress can attest to the appearance of under-eye circles. Many cases of eye circles can stem from genetics. Whether it be due to thin skin or an increase in pigment, under-eye circles are generally unsightly.

  • Use a product that contains retinol. Retinol improves the production of collagen, which can help manage both thin skin and dark pigmentation.
  • Sleep can also play a factor. Shoot for between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. In addition, sleeping on your back with an extra pillow helps keep fluid from pooling overnight. Be aware of allergens and keep a protective case over your pillow.
  • Avoid touching the area. Under-eye circles can appear from skin inflammation after rubbing your eyes. When using make-up remover towelettes, wipe gently in a single direction rather than vigorously rubbing back and forth.
  • Stay hydrated. The body retains as much water as possible when dehydrated, causing puffiness under the eyes. This means reducing alcohol consumption. If you’re seeing dark circles and drink often, it could mean the alcohol is dehydrating your body.
  • For a quick fix, cool down the inflamed area. Hold cold cucumber slices, gel eye masks or wash rags under your eyes for 10 to 20 minutes.

Everyone experiences under-eye circles. They can be avoided by taking necessary steps to care for your health and skin. Reach Knoxville Dermatology Group by calling (865)690-9467.
