Perioral Dermatitis

October 30, 2012

Perioral dermatitis is a rash made up of red bumps that mainly occurs around the mouth, though the nose, eyes, forehead and other parts of the face and head may also be affected.

The bumps may be filled with fluid or pus, and they may produce a burning sensation. Because it resembles acne, the two conditions are often mistaken. Perioral dermatitis is not dangerous from a medical standpoint, but it can be a source of embarrassment for those affected.

Young women are the ones who are most likely to have perioral dermatitis, accounting for some 90 percent of cases. However, men may have this condition as well, although it is far less common. The cause of perioral dermatitis is unknown, but there may be a link between the use of topical steroidal creams and perioral dermatitis.

Dermatologists typically diagnose this condition by simply looking at the skin, although tests may be done to ensure a bacterial infection is not the source of the bumps. From there, your dermatologist may ask you to discontinue using facial creams and ointments, as well as toothpastes containing lauryl sulfate (which may cause perioral dermatitis), in conjunction with a prescription for antibiotics.

If you have persistent red bumps that occur around your mouth, you should see your dermatologist to see if you have a case of perioral dermatitis.

Are you experiencing redness or some of the other signs of perioral dermatitis? Skin health should be taken seriously, but we’re here to help. Schedule an appointment today with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
