Happy No Shave November! – Top Reasons Why Beards Are Healthy for Your Skin

November 5, 2015

Gentlemen, it’s that time of year again when men across the country ditch their razor blades and don a scruffier appearance. That’s right, No Shave November has finally arrived. This popular movement, however, is not only a hip beginning to the winter season—it is also a way to get healthier skin.

Beards are a winter coat for your face

Whether you love the winter or not, cold weather is infamous for bad skin. Decreasing temperatures and chilly winds often cause chapping on your lips and face. The cold weather can dry out your skin, and your face is the hardest part of your body to protect. Facial hair acts as natural protection for your face against the harsh winter elements and also keeps your cheeks warm.

Beards are a natural sun block

The thicker the beard, the less contact your skin has with the sun. While it may not be as warm in November as in summer, the sun is still shining and forcing UV rays onto your face. An overexposure of UV rays can be harmful to your skin, but a beard can help protect you from the consequences. Research has shown that a beard can block up to 95 percent of the sun’s damaging rays, which lessens the chance of cancer and wrinkly skin.

Beards can decrease acne breakouts

For men, shaving is one of the major causes of acne breakouts. It can also worsen pre-existing acne, and under the right conditions, can cause acne-related skin infections. Razors can irritate the skin and cause further complications with inflammation and scarring. Giving your skin a break from shaving can be beneficial and relieve you from troublesome acne. This month, put down your razor and show off your beard. Trust us, your skin will thank you.
