Excessive Sweating or Hyperhidrosis

November 13, 2012

Do you sweat excessively, but ignore it because you think it is normal? Well, it is more common than you think. There is even a name for it.

Hyperhidrosis is a common medical condition which causes a person to sweat excessively and unpredictably. It occurs most often under the arms (armpits), but it can also afflict the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. For many, it begins in adolescence and gradually become worse with time.

Sweating can be embarrassing. Sweat stains on your clothes or sweaty palms during handshakes can be the source of embarrassment for those who suffer from hyperhidrosis. There is no specific cause, and most people who have it are healthy, although neurological, metabolic and other systemic diseases sometimes play a hand.

There are several treatment options, so visit your local dermatologist to figure out what works best for you. One option is prescription-strength antiperspirant containing aluminum chloride hexahydrate. This prohibits the majority of underarm perspiration. Another option is oral medications that can be taken for sweating in other places such as the hands and feet. Additionally, both botox and surgery have been to known to treat excessive sweating.

If you need more serious help with skin issues or something else that is troubling your skin, we are here to help. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment today with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
