A Rough Patch

August 29, 2013

Have you ever had a rough patch of skin show up on your arm or leg, then show up again and again? You aren’t the only one experiencing this itchy nuisance called eczema. According to the National Eczema Association, more than 30 million Americans are affected by it.

Eczema is a chronic condition that is characterized by dry, itchy, red patches of skin. Although a chronic condition, these inflammations usually flare up in episodes and vary in length. One tell-tale sign of an episode is itchiness followed by a rash. Typically eczema is diagnosed in infancy and improves with time.

Eczema has been linked to genetics. If you have extra sensitive skin or an overactive immune system, you most likely have already experienced an itchy rash or two. Defects in your skin barrier contribute to your risk of getting eczema as it lets moisture out and germs into your body. People who have asthma or have had hay fever are also at a higher risk. Eczema tends to flare up in times of stress, in cold, dry climates or if your skin comes in contact with an irritating substance like wool or synthetic fabrics or soaps.

Just like with poison ivy or mosquito bites, the more you itch the worse it gets. Also be mindful of what medicines or ointments you use to alleviate your symptoms. Your skin is very vulnerable and the chemicals could worsen the condition. Consult one of our dermatologists before applying or taking any medications.

If you have any questions about eczema or notice any changes in your skin, please call us today at 865-690-9467. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment with one of our board certified physicians in Knoxville to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
