What’s causing your body acne?

June 22, 2016

This summer, don’t be afraid to bare your skin. Much like facial acne, body acne can be embarrassing and uncomfortable, but there are many effective treatments available. If you are among the 50 million Americans who suffer from acne annually, the first step is to understand what may be causing your condition.

General causes of body acne

Causes of body acne are often similar to those that cause facial acne, including diet, stress, makeup and skincare products. Drink plenty of water and keep a well-balanced diet to help keep your body breakout free. When shopping for new makeup or skincare products, look for gentle cleansers and moisturizers (SPF is a plus!), and labels that state “non-comedogenic” or “dermatologist approved.”

Hormonal causes

Hormonal acne is the most common source of breakouts. It causes the overproduction of oil that often leads to clogged pores. Because of this excess oil production, hormones can also increase the amount of acne-causing bacterium, inflammation and number of androgens in both men and women.

Acne Mechanica

Specific to body and back acne, acne mechanica is caused by irritation to the skin and excess sweat. Your back is especially prone to acne as it is the most often exposed to irritants that rub against it. Tight-fitting clothes, backpacks and weight-lifting machines are just a few others that can cause irritation to the skin.

A number of solutions are available to clear and prevent acne breakouts. If you have body acne, make an appointment with one of our skincare experts by calling (865) 690-9467. Let us help you have beautiful skin you will love to show off this summer.
