What is Staph?

March 26, 2014

Staph infections are a very common skin condition. The bacteria that cause these infections are usually found on the surface of the skin, especially around the nose, mouth, and genitals. If the skin is punctured or broken, the bacteria can enter the wound to cause an infection.

Most infections are, easy to treat, not life threatening and limited to a small area of skin. If you notice tiny blisters around the nose or mouth, you may have developed impetigo. Other signs of skin infections may include an area of tenderness, swelling, warmth or redness.

Staph bacteria can and will spread, so try not to touch the infected area and keep your hands washed. If you play a sport or live in close quarters (like a college dorm), keep your towels, linens, and clothing to yourself.

While most infections are mild and treatable, some can occasionally become serious. If the staph bacteria moves from the skin to the bloodstream, other parts of the body like your heart and lungs may be affected. Call your doctor if an area of infection is accompanied by a fever.

If you have any questions about staph infection or about changes in your skin, please call us today at 865-690-9467. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
