Summer Skin Care Tips – Become SPF Savvy

May 30, 2013

Summer’s here which means beach trips and lying out by the pool. Protecting your skin will give you the best summer glow, but what do you know about the sunscreen you’re putting on your skin? Do you know how long it will protect you? What do the SPF numbers mean? We’ve got you covered with a few facts about your skin and sunscreen:

• First and foremost – LATHER UP! Make sure you are using sunscreen this summer. Every little bit helps!
• Know your sunscreen – the SPF number indicates how long you can stay out in the sun without burning. For example, an SPF 30 lotion protects you 30 times longer than normal. If you burn typically after 10 minutes outside, you can stay out for 300 minutes without burning.
• Put it on 30 minutes before exposure – sunscreen needs some time to soak into your skin for the full effect so applying it 30 minutes before ensures you get the utmost protection.
• Reapply – many people think that the higher the SPF, the longer they can stay out without worrying about burning. Although it does increase the amount of time you can withstand sun exposure, SPF 70 or 100 will not prevent you from ever burning. Be sure to reapply your sunscreen every two to three hours. Also, combining SPF 15 and SPF 10 will not get you 25 times more sun time. Stick with SPF 30+ for the best protection.
• Use an ounce – this may sound like a lot but to make sure you’re protected, this is the recommended amount for your body.
• Make sure you are fully protected – you should cover your ENTIRE body with sunscreen. Don’t forget your head, hands, feet and ears. Use a lip balm of at least SPF 15 to protect your lips. The sun can burn skin even through your cotton t-shirt, so be sure to apply everywhere!
• Know the sun – the sun’s peak times are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You are more likely to get burned during these peak times, so stay covered in sunscreen and in the shade.
• Better safe than sorry – if you notice a change in your skin, like mole discoloration, mole growth, or even burns, contact one of our certified physicians at Knoxville Dermatology Group. Although skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, it is the most preventable.

If you have any questions about skin protection or any changes in your skin, please call us today at 865-690-9467. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
