Port-Wine Stains

October 10, 2013

Red wine is notorious for leaving the most difficult stains. Port-wine stains are a different kind of “stain” – it is a birthmark typically found on the face, scalp or neck.

Port-wine stains appear when an area of skin doesn’t get a sufficient supply of nerve fibers and blood vessels expand to form the birthmark. In most cases, port-wine stains are not physically painful or dangerous, but they can cause some emotional distress. They usually start out pink and darken over time. Early stains are usually flat, but thickening of a lesion or the development of small lumps can occur.

Many treatments are available for port-wine stains including freezing, surgery and radiation. Laser treatments are commonly considered the most effective option for patients with port-wine stains. Treatments should be started early in life for best results. Port-wine stains can also be covered with cosmetics as a less invasive option. To determine the best option for you or your child, stop by our office to speak with one of our experienced dermatologists!
