Milia–Causes and Treatment

October 11, 2012

The skin around the eyes is 10 times thinner than the skin on the rest of the face and body. This extremely delicate area is also one of the places where signs of aging first appear. With the need to take good care of this small area through creams and other things, you wouldn’t think that could be adversely affecting it-right? Well, you might be surprised.

Milia are tiny, white bumps on the skin around the eye. Milia occur when dead skin cells get trapped in small pockets of the skin, forming little bumps. This is very common in newborns and relatively common in adults, especially those using thick eye cream or other products around the eye area. If you are using something, make sure it is non-comedogenic or oil-free.

Milia is hard to prevent. The best tool for prevention is exfoliating the skin. When you don’t exfoliate, those dead skin cells are left on the surface of the skin and can become easily trapped. However, if you suspect that you may have milia, your dermatologist can prescribe treatments that can help clear it up.

If you need more serious help with skin issues or something else that is troubling your skin, we are here to help. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment today with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
