Did you know your cosmetic bag could be growing more than just your beauty? If not protected, cosmetic products could harvest yeasts, molds and bacteria. To combat this, pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies incorporate preservatives called parabens into their products. Used in combination with other types of preservatives, parabens protect against microbial growth and help to maintain product integrity. Seems like a good thing, right?
While their purpose seems valid, a recent study identified parabens in biopsy samples from breast tumors. In the 1990’s, parabens were deemed xenoestrogens- agents that mimic estrogen in the body. Estrogen is a hormone known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. Furthermore, researchers have found parabens in breast tumors and believe there could be a relationship between parabens and tumors.
Cosmetic companies do promise minimum concentration of parabens in their individual products, but because they are so widely used, it is important to monitor your exposure. Some companies and product lines are now offering paraben-free products such as lipsticks, lotions, shampoos and more. Even safer are oil-based organic products that don’t contain water (which calls for a preservative).
