Folliculitis

September 25, 2012

Have you ever gotten razor burn–those little red bumps that creep up after shaving? If so, then you’ve had a case of folliculitis.

Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles that can be caused by either bacteria or fungus. The infection causes a small, pimple-like bump that may itch, burn or otherwise be painful. It can occur anywhere that hair grows, but is most common on the scalp, face, groin and thighs.

Folliculitis comes about when hair follicles are damaged. This most frequently occurs as a result of friction from clothing or shaving. To prevent the condition, try to reduce friction from clothing and avoid shaving near the affected area if possible. If the infected area must be shaved, use an electric razor or a fresh, clean razor blade.

The most common treatment option is to press a warm, moist rag on the bumps. This should cause the affected pores to open up and promote drainage. However, if this method is unsuccessful in curing the folliculitis, there are medications your dermatologist can prescribe. These include antibiotics, either topical or oral, or anti-fungal medication.

If you need more serious help with skin issues or something else that is troubling your skin, we are here to help. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment today with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
