Dermatology for the Elderly

September 20, 2012

As people age, they are subject to certain skin conditions, some more serious than others, that younger folks are not. Skin undergoes a number of changes as people become older that can affect how the skin looks. It loses its elasticity, becomes thinner and can lose the fatty tissue supporting it. As a result, wrinkles, facial movement lines and liver spots all become more pronounced or common in the elderly.

So what causes these problems? There are a number of factors that can contribute: gravity, heredity, diet, lifestyle habits (such as smoking). However, the most common source of skin conditions in the elderly is sun exposure. UV rays are the leading source of skin damage in geriatrics. Sun damage can cause wrinkles, blotchiness and cancer.

Here is a list of some dermatological occurrences that are frequently found in the elderly and what you need to do about them.

  • Wrinkles – Wrinkles are a common effect of sun exposure and/or smoking. They are one of the more visible signs of aging and are a result of the skin losing its elasticity. Wrinkles do not pose any medical danger. Wrinkles can’t be cured, but there are creams available that can diminish their prominence.
  • Age spots – Also known as liver spots, though the liver  has nothing to do with them. These are brown patches of skin often found on the face, arms and hands. They are often a result of sun exposure. There are some treatments for age spots, although they aren’t a health risk.
  • Cancer – Skin cancer is frequently caused by excessive sun exposure. For more information about when you should see a dermatologist about a mole, check out our previous blog post on the subject.

If you need more serious help with skin issues or something else that is troubling your skin, we are here to help. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment today with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.

    Dr Dittrich is my physician.

    I lost 25 pounds in 2012 and
    need to tighten skin, especially
    in lower abdomen. Other skin
    problems include bags under my
eyes, buttocks lift (?), breasts lift,
    upper arms skin tightening,
    discoloration of lower legs due
    to diabetic peripheral neuropathy &
    some face wrinkles.

Are there solutions to these problems
in the short term? At what costs? Are
any of the procedures covered (partially)
by Windsor Extra Diabetes Special Needs
plan? How soon could the abdomen
skin tightening be scheduled? Time to
    healing?

What is the URL for your Medi-Spa?

    I appreciate your assistance.
