As you grow older you may start to pay closer attention to those fine lines and wrinkles. There are multiple ways to restore your youthful appearance. One of the most popular is Botox, a drug that temporarily smooths out wrinkles. While it has been used cosmetically by millions of people for more than a decade, you may have questions about what is true and what isn’t about Botox.

We’re here to set the record straight.

Myth: Botox is dangerous.

Botox is a natural chemical that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic use in 2002. More than 11 million successful Botox cosmetic injections have been administered since its introduction. You should always make sure you are letting a qualified professional inject Botox into your body.

Myth: Botox is addictive.

Botox is not a physically addictive chemical and does not affect the body beyond the injection site. You might be labeled a Botex addict only if you’re addicted to the way it makes you look younger.

Myth: My face will become frozen.

Contrary to popular belief, Botox does not cause the overall muscles in your face to freeze. Areas such as forehead furrows, crow’s feet and smile lines are where the injection occurs. You will still be able to display a wide variety of your emotions.

Myth: Botox will travel and infect my entire body.

Rest assured, Botox is not going to put your body under attack. Its diffusion is designed to be extremely localized and stays within a centimeter of the injection point.

Myth: Botox and dermal fillers are the same.

Botox and dermal fillers perform differently. Although they both lessen wrinkles, they are separated by their functionality. Botox relaxes muscles that create wrinkles, whereas dermal fillers add volume and restore tissue to the skin.
