When to Get Treatment for Hives
Hives are a very common skin problem. These red, itchy welts can appear anywhere on the skin and can come in many different sizes. While most cases of hives are harmless and can be treated at home, you should be aware of the signs and symptoms.
Hives appear as raised, red welts on the skin and can occur individually or in a group. The vast majority of cases of hives will itch, but some can also swell or hurt. In even rarer cases, burning or stinging of the affected area is possible. Instances of hives usually last less than six weeks (acute hives), but extreme cases can last longer (chronic hives).
While the diagnosis of hives is usually easily done by sight alone, pinpointing the cause can be very difficult. The most common cause of hives is an allergic reaction, which can be caused by food, medicine, insect bites/stings, animals, pollen, touching certain material that you are allergic to or receiving allergy shots. Other causes may include infections, illnesses, exposure to sun, heat or cold, exercise, stress, contact with chemicals or scratching the skin. It can take only minutes for hives to appear after exposure to one of the above triggers.
An antihistamine that can be purchased over-the-counter is the most common treatment for mild to moderate cases. Severe cases such as chronic hives, however, may require a prescription antihistamine. Most instances of hives are mild enough that treatment can be done at home, but there are signs that it is time to see a doctor. If your hives don’t respond to treatment, cause great discomfort or your symptoms continue longer than a few days, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor. There is also a small chance that your hives could develop into a situation in which you would need emergency care. If you experience any of the following symptoms in conjunction with hives, seek emergency treatment: light-headedness, trouble breathing or swelling of the throat.
