What You Should Know about Ringworm
Ringworm is a common fungal infection of the skin, but most either don’t know much about it or have incorrect information.
Ringworm, also known by the medical term tinea, is a fungal infection that appears on the surface of the skin, often as a red, circular rash with healthy looking skin in the middle. The infection gets its name from an early, incorrect belief that it was caused by a worm due to its appearance.
While ringworm is most common in children, it can affect people of all ages. Its commonality is mainly due to the fact that it is incredibly contagious. It can be spread in many ways, including person to person, animal to person, object to person and soil to person. While it’s hard to completely protect yourself from the infection, here are steps you can take to prevent coming into contact with it:
- Limit your exposure to moisture, which the fungi thrives in
- Avoid close contact with a person or animal who has been affected
- Don’t share clothing, towels or other personal items with someone who has been affected
- Keep your skin clean
Once you have contracted ringworm, there are a number of treatment options available. Most cases are mild and only require an over-the-counter antifungal cream. However, severe cases or cases that don’t respond to over-the-counter drugs may need either a prescription topical cream or prescription oral medication. If your rash does not improve within two weeks of self-treatment, or the rash displays signs of excessive redness, swelling or drainage, you should see a doctor immediately. A fever could be a sign of a further infection and should also be examined by a doctor.
