Unwelcomed Guests

After throwing a party, it’s great to hear “Thanks for being a great host!” from your guests. But when it comes to ringworm and other parasites, to be a host is no compliment.

Ringworm, also know as tinea, is a red ring of small blisters or scaly skin caused by fungi called dermatophytes. The fungi are tiny organisms that can be found on the dead tissues of skin, hair, and nails. Once the fungus begins to grow, it spreads out in rings- hence the name ringworm. You can rest assured ringworm has nothing to do with worms at all.

Children are most susceptible to ringworm, but adults may become infected too. You may notice ringworm on the body or scalp. It is very important to not share hats, combs, towels or clothing because ringworm can and will spread. Also realize that ringworm can infect dogs and cats and can spread to humans through direct contact – so avoid touching the area!

If you notice a red bump on your scalp, red rings on your body or itchy nails, you may have ringworm. Fortunately, treatment for this type of infection is simple. You will be given a topical anti-fungal cream that should heal the area quickly. If your scalp or nails are infected, you may be given an oral treatment.

If you have any questions about ringworm or about changes in your skin, please call us today at 865-690-9467. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness.
