Understanding Seborrhiec Dermatitis

As we’ve written about before, there are many different types of dermatitis. This post will focus on seborrhiec dermatitis, a common disorder that usually affects your scalp. It’s often confused for other skin conditions, so we’ve described it further below.

Seborrhiec dermatitis causes a scaly, red rash, usually along with severe dandruff. As stated above, it most often affects the scalp, but it can also appear on your face, chest and back. The affected area is usually inflamed and red. Dandruff will also appear on your scalp, eyebrows, beard or mustache. The condition is chronic, meaning that there’s no cure, but there are treatment options available to help alleviate your symptoms and avoid flare-ups.

The cause of seborrhiec dermatitis is not known, although it’s neither contagious nor an indication of poor hygiene. Researchers believe that certain factors such as change of season, stress, neurological conditions and having immune system deficiencies can play a role in the development and severity of the condition.

While it’s possible to treat mild cases of seborrhiec dermatitis at home, there are times when you should see a doctor. If self-treatment has failed, or you’re worried that your skin might be infected, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor. Also, if the condition is causing you embarrassment or discomfort, seeing your doctor for treatment can help. The treatment that your doctor prescribes depends on skin type, severity and location. Options include lotions, creams and medicated shampoos, but each case can be handled differently.

If you need more serious help with skin issues or something else that is troubling your skin, we are here to help. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment today with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
