The Rundown on Retinoids

Having good, healthy skin can make a big difference when it comes to overall beauty and improved self-confidence. From acne and psoriasis to wrinkles and hyper-pigmentation, there’s one treatment that has proven to be widely effective – retinoids.

For more than 40 years, prescription-strength retinoids have been recommended by dermatologists to help speed up cell turnover, giving your skin a restored glow and smooth complexion.

Often considered a miracle drug for your skin, these vitamin-A derivatives offer a multitude of benefits from unclogging your pores and boosting collagen production to fading hyperpigmentation spots.

Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?

Retinoids have been around since the 1970s and come in three prescription-strength forms — tretinoin, tazarotene and adapalene.

Tretinoin — better known as its brand name Retin-A — was the first retinoid to receive FDA approval and has since helped patients experience clearer, softer and brighter skin. The strongest of the three is Tazarotene, which may cause more irritation. Adapalene is the mildest, but may produce less desirable results.

While effective, there can be some drawbacks, including redness, dryness and irritation. For new users, it’s important to gradually incorporate retinoid products into your daily routine, applying a small amount once every three days. Once your skin gets accustomed to it, more frequent applications can be added.

Be sure to drink plenty of water and don’t forget to apply facial moisturizer and sunscreen.

Many over-the-counter retinoids are available but the products prescribed by a professional will be stronger and more effective. If you’re looking to transform your skin and see visible results, please call us to schedule an appointment with one of our expert skincare providers.
