nail fungus

A tell-tale sign of stress or diet change can be seen in our nails. They can become brittle, develop white spots and form ridges. But when you begin feeling pain in your fingernails or toenails, it may be a symptom of another condition.

Ingrown nails are caused by pressure from the side of your nail against your skin. After an extended period of time, this pressure causes irritation, swelling, and painful infections. It’s more common to happen in your big toe because of how much weight your body puts on it. The skin surrounding the nail will be red and sore to the touch at first. If left without proper care, the skin will become infected. It may bulge and possibly ooze. You should immediately call your doctor if this happens.

Fungal nail infections happen through tiny cuts surrounding the nail and nail bed. The most common fungus to affect nails is the same one that causes athlete’s foot – tinea. Similar to athlete’s foot, you can contract the fungi from walking barefoot in public showers or pools or by sharing personal items such as nail clippers.

If you feel pain in your nails, whether it’s an ingrown nail or fungal infection, it’s best to schedule an appointment with one of our certified dermatologists to get to the root of the problem. With proper treatment, we can help you get some quick relief and keep your nails looking healthy and vibrant.
