4 Tips to Manage Psoriasis

Painful, dry and flaking skin are often symptoms of a chronic, noncontagious skin condition called psoriasis. The itchy, red or silvery-scaled patches are often persistent and long-lasting. Unfortunately, this disease has no cure and affects the life-cycle of your skin cells. Sometimes your body may experience periods of remission where your psoriasis gets better, but these will often be followed by worse flare-ups. There are a few ways to manage psoriasis.

Protect yourself from the weather.

Dry, cold weather can often trigger psoriasis flare-ups or worsen the condition. Protect your skin when it’s chilly out by covering up with warm layers and limiting exposure to cold weather.

Use a humidifier.

Having humidity in the air can help relieve the irritation from psoriasis. Keep the air in your home moist by using a humidifier. The more moisture you can lock in your skin, the better.

Use unscented, moisturizing lotions.

Creams and lotions are key when it comes to keeping dry skin at bay. Thicker creams and oils, like petroleum jelly, often work best at locking in moisture. You should look for a fragrance free moisturizer for sensitive skin.

Take care of your skin.

Although psoriasis can be irritating and uncomfortable, avoid picking and scratching at the red patches. This can damage your skin further, increase flare-ups and cause infections. Scrapes, bumps and cuts on your skin can cause additional problems.
