Getting to Know Your Skin

As our largest organ, skin is our first line of defense against the elements we encounter in daily life. From the sun’s damaging rays to pollutants in the air, there are many possible hazards that can cause our skin stress. Being under the care of a board certified dermatologist is only part of a healthy skin plan. It is also important to take regular stock of your skin and its condition so that you can be aware of any potential issues. Also, don’t make the mistake of waiting to see a doctor until you have a problem. A routine skin check from a board certified dermatologist will help keep your skin in great shape, allowing you to focus on prevention.

Getting to Know Your Skin:

Choose a day each month and set aside some time to get to know your skin. Don’t be shy, but really look at every inch of yourself. This includes often overlooked regions such as palms of hands, soles of feet, scalp and behind ears. It’s a proven fact that patients are more likely to spot skin cancer and the best way to do so is to be familiar with every mark. This way, you’ll know if something is growing or changing color.

As a rule of thumb, skin tone, texture and color should be generally uniform. If you have uneven patches, scaly rough spots or areas with splotchy color, these are all things you should bring to your dermatologist’s attention. These can be symptoms of skin conditions that should be addressed.

Take Inventory:

If a spot appears on your skin seemingly out of the blue, this is also something to share with your doctor. Sometimes moles and other sunspots can pop up, but it’s always best to get a professional opinion from a board certified dermatologist. If you feel like you can’t remember your skin’s spots, take pictures and bring them to your doctor’s office when you have your appointment. It can be helpful to give your dermatologist something to compare the problem area to and often a verbal description isn’t completely accurate.

The list of possible skin conditions is fairly extensive, but you don’t have to worry.
