10 Tips to Get Your Best Sunless Tan Yet
Spring break is almost among us, and we are itching to dip our toes in sun-bleached sands and sparkling blue waters. Before you join nearly ten million Americans who are still heading to tanning salons for a ‘base-tan,’ consider the effects those harmful rays can have on your skin. There are other ways that you can achieve a bronzed, summer look. One of our favorites is sunless tanning.
When it comes to sunless tanning, there are a few tips and tricks to practice in order to achieve a natural-looking and sun-kissed glow. We’ve listed a few must do’s and don’ts to get you ready for spring break—just remember to pack the sunscreen on too!
- DO exfoliate! Use a body scrub to remove dead skin cells and rough, dry patches to ensure a smooth application of sunless tanning product. Whether you opt for a professional spray tan or an at-home spray kit, lotion or wipes, this is a must.
- DON’T apply products beforehand. Perfumes, deodorant, makeup and even bar soap in the shower, can cause flaking or leave behind residue that will interfere with your sunless tanning product.
- DO generously apply lotion on the soles of your feet and palms of your hands and lip balm to your lips to ensure natural-looking results. Just remember to blend the edges to avoid harsh lines.
- DON’T apply self-tanning lotion all over your face. Instead, apply it only to areas where the sun hits your face, such as the top of your forehead, bridge of your nose and cheek bones, and blend, blend, blend!
- DO wear undergarments and eyewear to protect sensitive areas and eyes if opting for a spray tan.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY, DON’T forget the sunscreen. Having safe, sun-free results does not mean you can venture outside without SPF protection. Maintain your gorgeous glow and protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays with sunscreen of at least SPF 15.
Not protecting your skin from the sun can have potentially deadly consequences. More than 400,000 cases of skin cancer as a result of tanning bed use are reported each year. Opt for safe, sun-free and UV-free products and options to get your glow in time for spring break. Concerned that you might be at risk for the ABCDs of skin cancer and melanoma?
