It’s undeniable – a baby’s laugh can cheer up almost anyone! So when the family gathers for the holidays, it’s in everyone’s best interest to keep baby happy. Your baby can get that kissable softness with healthy skincare, and your Knoxville Dermatology friends have made a list of tips just for newborns.

Keep things plain and simple. Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products are your best bet to avoid any possible irritants like perfumes or dyes. Also, simplify their bath routine. Babies don’t need a bath every day. Two to three times a week for a full bath helps preserve your baby’s natural oils. A baby’s skin is very sensitive, yet they do not need a lot of complicated skincare early in life.

Most cases of diaper rash are the result of skin irritation. Avoid diaper rash by keeping baby bums clean. Change diapers the moment you suspect any kind of treasure has been deposited. Wash your hands before and after diaper changes, and keep both your hands and baby’s bum dry. If your child develops a rash that doesn’t improve after a couple of days, contact your doctor as it may be due to a fungal or bacterial infection.

Cradle cap, a form of seborrheic dermatitis, is the child version of dandruff. It usually occurs in children younger than four months old. Most of the time, gently washing the affected area will help clear up the scalp, but if it becomes a recurring condition, contact your doctor immediately.

Season’s greetings to your cute, little “elf” and a wish for a New Year of soft, healthy skin!
