April Showers Bring Spring Allergies
We’ve all heard the old adage that “April showers bring May flowers,” but there are other less desirable effects associated with April’s seasonal changes, and the one we’re highlighting here is seasonal allergies. Allergies can have significantly adverse effects on our skin but awareness and information about how to treat them can help.
In the spring, we are exposed to invisible airborne allergens such as pollen, dust and mold. These cause our skin to become inflamed and also produce the neurotransmitter histamine which dilates blood vessels and leads to redness and itching. Other inflammatory responses that can develop from allergens in nature are eczema and contact dermatitis.
Contact dermatitis is defined as the presence of a skin reaction caused by certain substances. It should always be diagnosed and treated by a dermatologist. If you have already suffered from a case of contact dermatitis, it’s important to allow your skin to heal and avoid putting many different products on it while the healing process is taking place.
During the spring/summer months the weather and air are constantly changing and this makes it important to pay careful attention to your skin. It is also crucial to do your homework and trust the opinion of a board certified dermatologist about what products you should use on your skin to prevent unnecessary skin allergy experiences. These are not only uncomfortable, but also can be unsightly.
As temperatures warm, skin can become more irritated in sensitive areas like inside elbows and behind knees. One way to alleviate discomfort is to use a gentle powder to keep moisture at a minimum. Warmer weather also causes our bodies to release toxins and drinking plenty of water will help flush them out, leading to healthier skin.
Spring brings allergies whether we like it or not, but it is possible to enjoy this time of year by taking a proactive stance about your skin’s health.
