An Overview of Eczema
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic dermatological disease that causes inflammation and itching of the skin.
Eczema can occur on any part of the body, but it is most often found on the elbows and knees. It is characterized by patches of red or brownish-gray skin that are almost always itchy. These patches may be raised and made of several small bumps, which may ooze from excessive scratching. The skin in the affected area is also typically dry, cracked or scaly. Stress and emotional duress may worsen eczema.
It not uncommon for eczema sufferers to develop bacterial skin infections. This is due to constant scratching that can leave people with areas of exposed skin, which bacteria then enter and infect.
The cause of eczema is unknown, although scientists believe there may be a hereditary element present, since many people who develop it also have asthma or hay fever. However, this correlation is not concrete since there are many people who develop eczema but not asthma or hay fever and vice versa. Eczema may also be caused by a combination of dry skin and an immune system malfunction.
There is no known cure for eczema, although there are effective treatments that can reduce the severity and frequency of flare-ups. These include corticosteroid creams, oral antibiotics and antihistamines.
Those suffering from eczema might be able to alleviate their symptoms by keeping their skin moisturized and limiting the frequency and duration of baths, as they tend to dry out the skin. Also, as difficult as it may be, it is advised to avoid scratching your eczema to avoid breaking the skin and exposing yourself to bacterial infection.
