Age Spots or Liver Spots?
Much like tree rings, we have liver spots that can reveal our age. But they aren’t just for the elderly – young people can also get them with too much sun exposure. It seems there’s some confusion about the cause of liver spots and the difference between age spots and liver spots.
Liver spots are flat, oval-shaped spots on your skin that are a shade of brown, black or gray. They can appear in clusters or as a single spot on your skin. The size of liver spots ranges from that of a freckle to almost half an inch. Liver spots are harmless and do not require treatment, but they can be unsightly. Although they are very common in adults older than 40, there are various causes of liver spots such as aging, genetics and sun exposure. Also, as people get older, sometimes their bodies begin producing more melanin (skin pigment) than before. This can also cause liver spots.
The big confusion is over the name. Liver spots were originally thought to be connected with liver function but were later discovered to be more associated with sun exposure and the production of melanin. The name sticks around because of the brown color of the spots. They are also known as age spots, skin spots and sun-induced skin changes.
These spots can be frustrating but they are easily preventable. Minimize your sun exposure especially during the sun’s peak times of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. When you do have to be outdoors, be sure to cover up with clothing, hats and SPF. Even when you are driving or riding around in the car, you are still exposed to the sun’s rays.
