3 Things You Should Know Before Starting Accutane
Isotretinoin, better known as Accutane, is an effective drug that is used to combat and treat severe cases of acne. For up to 85 percent of patients who complete an isotretinoin course of treatment, there have been lifelong results. How? Isotretinoin manipulates the sebum glands, prohibiting them from producing the oils that can clog up pores and cause painful bouts of acne breakouts. The outcome can be dramatically life changing, giving patients the confidence to step out in their own skin. If you are considering trying an isotretinoin routine, it is important to understand these three things:
Expect dryness.
Because isotretinoin affects the oil-producing sebaceous glands, your skin will become drier than normal. Stock up on plenty of moisturizers and emollients to maintain skin hydration and prevent extreme dryness and flaking.
Avoid pregnancy.
Isotretinoin can cause serious birth defects if taken during pregnancy. To help ensure patient safety, some dermatologists may require you to take pregnancy tests during your course of treatment, or for you to be on some form of birth control prior to treatment. If you think you are or are planning to become pregnant, talk to you dermatologist about other skin care options might be available.
Eat well.
Isotretinoin is best absorbed into your body when it is taken immediately after a heavy meal. Taking isotretinoin without a meal can upset and irritate your stomach. You should also deter from drinking alcohol to avoid risk of liver damage.
