Adult Acne

January 27, 2012

It is estimated that nearly 30% of women and 20% of men ages 20 to 60 experience skin breakouts caused by adult acne. The condition is caused by sebum, a pore-clogging oily substance produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands. Adults who suffer from acne can blame hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones) as well as estrogen (female hormones).

Pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause as well as medications such as corticosteroids and cosmetics can also contribute to the development of acne in adults.

Treatment

Since most acne medications are created for teen skin, treatment can be difficult. Over-the-counter products may have some effectiveness, but more than likely, visiting a board certified dermatologist will be necessary to get a tailored skincare plan for your particular issue and experience lasting results.

Face Washing

There are steps you can take to experience healthier skin and they begin with how you clean your skin. Try to keep your face clean during the day.  Wash your face twice daily with your cleanser (if your skin is dry, try using water the second time) and use only warm water (hot water is drying). Wash for just 1-2 minutes (more can irritate your skin). Use your hands instead of a rough washcloth. If you must wash with a cloth, try using one made for infants because it will be gentler.

Are you embarrassed to be an adult dealing with acne? Skin health should be taken seriously, but we’re here to help. Schedule an appointment today with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
