Bear Bold Lips

September 11, 2014

red lips
Fall’s impending cool weather means breaking out the camel, maroon and neutral colors. It  can also be a great time to experiment with lip color. But before you pucker up, make sure your lips are the perfect canvas to display your undying love for the fall palate.

Anatomy and genetics play a big part into your lips’ sensitivity. With only a thin layer of skin as protection and no oil and sweat glands, your lips experience the full brunt of the elements. Things like salty foods, drinks, licking your lips and various environmental elements can cause your lips to crack or become chapped.

Diet plays another factor in the appearance of your lips. Acidic foods that throw off your pH balance can affect lips’ moisture. An easy remedy is to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Maintaining a diet rich in vitamins A, B and C with high water content helps with your body’s acidic levels long-term.

Your lips need the love and attention you give the rest of your skin, too. Before bed, gently exfoliate your lips and apply a rich balm. You’ll wake each morning with soft, kissable lips – the perfect canvas for those bold autumn hues.

Live, Laugh, Love with Lips

January 23, 2014

In many ways, lips are so important. They help us eat. They convey our mood. They can even lead to love. Follow our tips for healthy lips so you can live, laugh and love.

With less than five cellular layers, the skin of the lips is much thinner and more vulnerable to common skin conditions. Lips are most sensitive to sunlight in the summer and winter. Keep a lip balm with UV protection on hand to protect lips from overexposure.

The skin on your lips is not only thin, but it lacks certain qualities that help keep other parts of the body protected. For instance, lips are not hairy nor do they have sweat glands. Our lips miss out on the protection layer of sweat and body oils which keep the skin smooth and regulate warmth. Without the sweat, lips dry out faster and become chapped more easily. Again, a quality lip balm works to lock in moisture and keep lips supple.

In addition to topical treatment, there are some preventative measures you can take to keep lips kissable. Try to avoid licking your lips – saliva actually dries out the skin. Be sure to drink water and stay hydrated to naturally moisten lips. Finally, a balanced diet will provide all the vitamins and nutrients you need to ensure lips and all other skin stays healthy and smooth.
