Are you applying face products in the right order?

Many of us already have a dedicated skin care routine, but did you know there is a correct order to apply your products? Using them in the proper sequence is key to optimizing their effectiveness. A general rule to remember when applying facial products is thin before thick – lighter products easily penetrate the skin and should be applied first. Follow these simple rules to get in your best skin.

Clean slate

Cleansing your face is the first thing you need to do before applying any topical products. Use a makeup remover of your choice, followed by a gentle wash with a facial cleanser. This give your face a clear canvas for product application and help your skin better absorb the active ingredients in your favorite products.

Medication

If you use topical acne medications, they should be applied immediately after you cleanse and dry your skin. This will allow the product to sink into your pores and get rid of pimple- and blackhead-causing bacteria. If you are using more than one topical medication, ask your skin care provider for advice. Mixing certain ingredients can irritate your skin or cause them to become ineffective.

Moisturize

Moisturizers are a heavier product that is applied on your skin. Apply a moisturizer to your face and neck to seal in the skin-loving benefits of the previously applied products. Regardless of your skin type, moisturizing is key to maintaining a healthy and glowing complexion.

Protect

SPF protection should be the last step in your regimen to act as a barrier between your skin and the sun. Without SPF, you will expose your skin to the damaging effects of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, which can result in skin cancer, dark spots and other forms of skin damage. Many moisturizers and makeup products on the market today have built-in SPF, but a little bit extra never hurts!

Applying your products in this order will help them do their best work and give you your best and healthy skin. Need help choosing what skin care products are right for you? Come visit our office at 123 Fox Road or call us at (865) 690-9467 to schedule an appointment with one of our expert skincare providers today.
