Psoriasis Treatment Gets the Blu Light

October 1, 2013

As the weather cools down, it’s natural for our skin to become more dry and flaky. While maybe all we need to do is change up our moisturizer, dry and itchy skin may be a symptom of a condition more serious than a weather reaction.

If you’re noticing dry, red patches of skin that don’t improve with everyday lotions or moisturizers, you may want to talk to one of our dermatologist about psoriasis. Psoriasis is a common skin disorder that may result in dry, cracked skin that bleeds. It can cause silvery scales, burning or soreness. If symptoms are mild or moderate, topical creams and ointments can be used for treatment. If the condition is severe, you may want to consider phototherapy.

Phototherapy uses natural or artificial ultraviolet light to kill the T-cells in the skin to slow skin cell turnover and reduce scaling that causes irritation. It is important to control the amount of sunlight. Intense sun exposure can worsen symptoms and cause skin damage. In the warmer months, natural sunlight is accessible and a great source of therapy. In the cooler months, stop by our office for a light therapy session. Or just come by so we can answer all the questions you’ve been ‘itching’ to ask about psoriasis and anything else skin-related!

If you have any questions about psoriasis and treatment options, please call us today at 865-690-9467. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
