Dandruff–How to Treat it

October 9, 2012

In a previous post, we covered what dandruff is and what causes it.

Dandruff in and of itself is not harmless or contagious. After all, it is merely dead skin cells falling from your scalp. However, it can be embarrassing for people with severe or persistent dandruff. It can also be indicative of other problems, such as psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis. If you do have one of those problems, fixing the underlying condition can cause the dandruff to clear up.

But what if you don’t have an underlying dermatological problem? What options do you have then?

The first thing to do is to make sure you are washing your hair daily. Practicing good hair hygiene is the first step towards getting rid of dandruff. However, this frequently isn’t enough to solve people’s problems. In that case, your dermatologist can help you out.

There are a number of special shampoos available by prescription that can treat dandruff. A dermatologist will be able to examine and diagnose your dandruff and recommend a shampoo that might be able to alleviate your dandruff problems. There are several different types of prescription shampoos, so if one doesn’t work, your doctor will be able to give you several suggestions until you find one that clears your dandruff up.

If you need more serious help with skin issues or something else that is troubling your skin, we are here to help. Skin health is an important part of total body wellness. Schedule an appointment today with one of our board certified physicians to get your skin the care it needs so it can reach its fullest, healthiest potential.
